Read Starlight Over Detrot with me.

The story is about.

Monster attacks. Crime. Illegal hallucinogens made from electric fruit.

They say things didn't use to be like this. They say things were different, before Luna came back 60 years ago, but Detective Hard "Hardy" Boiled of the Detrot Police Department has never known any world other than that demarcated by the seedy streets of his beloved decaying metropolis; a world in which the coroners sing and dance, surveillance bugs have personality disorders, and the Chief of Police is a scarier entity than most of the eldritch things the city attracts.

The grey unicorn who turned up dead outside the posh High Step Hotel seemed like just another case, but her missing horn is the pointy tip of a very large and nasty iceberg. It's up to Hardy and his friends - a rejected monster hunter, a psychic cab driver, and an underground antiques heir - to find out what’s going on in an investigation that promises to stick more than a cupcake into the very eye of Detrot.

Especially if Hardy has anything to say about it.

Act One, Chapter 20: Rolling in the Aisles

Chapter 20: Published April 29th 2013 was on a Monday and was in week 18 of 2013.

As of this writing it was 2910 days ago

MLP FiM Season 4 epi 22 would air April 19th 2014.

Okay so far, Hardy has broken the first 3 of the actions regarding Magical Contamination. I guess stopping to read the diary makes up a little bit for part three, he has an *idea* of it Bake and Boil dont want the papers that stop the school from attacking them. LOL

Okay... I was looking up for what the hall pass could be and came across that last one... I can totally imagine it being broken down into 7 images and and those being the hall pass with the words Hall pass written at the top of each one.  I'm being a bit lazy here... maybe I'll break it down myself and add it to the school's who' s who page at a later date.

Opps... Looks like they forgot to give the birdy a hall pass.

As their conversation was unfolding, an inkling of an idea was beginning to form; an idea that made use of the the bastard child of a vindictive vice principal, sitting alone in his basement home, weeping over lost love, and cursing the ankle-biting beasts he’d spent every day trying to save.

Oh, oh no.

Send the twins charging recklessly down the halls crashing into everything with the crazy bird in a bag between them. the other four follow behind pulling passes down and opening lockers and classrooms ... Nothing could possibly go wrong with this plan.

“Well, that was easier than I... tho...”

Hardy, no, don't break rule number 4!

Okay, Hardy is brilliant at coming up with ideas on the fly.  Really he just seems to need a gun pointed at his head or something.

In that second, I’d have laid her against any champion shot-putter in the Equestrian Games for that particular launch. I had plenty of time to ask myself: Why did that super-natural spatial awareness, that let her navigate our rabbit's-warren of a city and make tosses like that beauty, not translate into being able to fire her gun straight? Only the Princesses may know.

Telling the bad guy to reload... Very brilliant Chessie

I love how some how, of camera, the tides turn. ... Wait, what was Edina doing at the end?

Oh hey look, the chapter ended. Lets have a peek at the comments, 31

accidentally contaminated by an overzealous baker attempting to go all-out for a royal event.

I swear 50% of the horror stories I hear about in this story are Pinkie’s fault somehow.

nopony seemed to be coming to investigate

If this isn’t intentional in some way I’m going to be disappointed.

announcing Edina had regained consciousness.

All hell is going to break loose.

If it worked, we might save everypony, and even manage to avoid terminal bloodshed. If it failed, we’d probably all be dumped in the canal along with a half dozen innocents before the night was over.

So, Tuesday.

Today on “breaking bad” we learn why making drug labs in haunted schools is a bad idea. Sure, nobody ever looks there, but do you really want to take your chances with the side effects?

Well, this was just an extended (albeit interesting) action sequence, wasn’t it?

Once, I got a full confession just by having all the interrogating officers blow bubbles with a piece of gum whenever they were in the perp’s presence.

Someone once went to one of the "Rarity SCHOOL classes". The one in aggressively passive interrogations.

i know this is far too late a thing to complain about, but one little problem i have with the story is the lack of Hardy's prowess in nearly anything.
he isn't a idiot, unlikable, or a poorly written character, but too much of what he does do right and what he does get done feels like hes borrowing off the efforts of his allies. He doesn't really have his own set of specialized skills that make him exceed in anything related to the case. He's smart, but no investigative or tactical genius, isn't a crack shot like his partner, isn't a good fighter like Taxi or any other of the stilettos, The best skill hes shown is having the balls to stare down tough situations, which it still feels like he mostly lucks out in at the end.

I get that the main character doesn't have to be a paragon of bad assery, and if he was, it would be boring. But it just feels like every other character is better trained and suited for his job than he is. Its hard to root for a character who is suppose to be a hero cop, but isn't doing anything to put him above the other characters around him in one aspect or another.

A great and amazingly crafted story otherwise, one i shall continue to read feverishly. But I hope that in future chapter Hardy shows some more aptitude.

I don't really think Hardy is suppose to be the Hero cop.  He's just suppose to be a good guy.

Chapter 20: "Rolling in the Aisles" - well its a saying referring to something along the lines of laughing so hard you fall in to the aisles of a theater or something of the like.

Still waiting to know who the father of the egg is.

Me too... Are you going to ask every chapter? if you still are in chapter two your getting a who's who

4) Magical contamination seems curiously drawn to dramatic irony. Under no circumstances should you utter any phrase along the lines of “How bad can it be?” or “What’s the worst that could happen?” whilst inside a zone of magical contamination, as this can result in you being immediately rendered into glue.

4b) Using newly assigned rookies to ground a contamination zone is EXPRESSLY FORBIDDEN. Violators will have their pay docked to recoup hospital costs and be assigned to clerical duty until such a time as their supervisor deems them fit to return to active service.
Addendum to Appendix H of Detrot Police Department Manual § B.44(4)

It fits with High Spirits’ twisted logic; if they’ve got a hall pass, they’ve got permission to be where they are.

This lends itself to an interesting way of attacking the beam brewers and the video decryptors; simply report all the other hall passes as stolen and watch the chaos begin! Granted, safety scissors and glitter will not be very effective, but if they gather up a cart or two stuffed with softballs, 10kg medicine balls, and free weights from the school gym... :rainbowdetermined2:

I’m pretty sure nopony wants to volunteer to find out what else he decided to ‘improve.'

Just wait until you see the lavatories! If the snarling, snapping, ambush toilets do not loosen your bowels, the hyper-dimensional, screaming, wailing, wells of souls in the bowls will certainly scare the horse-apples out of you (both figuratively and literally)!

<assault on the auditorium>

Heh.

Smart thinking with the hall passes there. Nothing like a trolley full of enchanted school supplies to ruin both your situational awareness and your day...

I certainly hope none of the lab ponies perform a heel face turn and decide to attack Hardy et al in an unguarded moment. (It seems unlikely; Snicket does not strike me as someone who engenders Stockholm Syndrome.

Sorry i haven't read this chapter sooner, i've been preoccupied with other things.

It's pretty damn intense and the action is all here hand in hand with that lovely commentary going through Hardys mind. Swift just became my favourite character. I know the reference was to calamity Jane with that awesome shot but I just got flashbacks to Calamity from FoE. :-D
Considering they're both pegasi this just gets even better.

I am still a bit curious about how pegasi function in Detrot.

Of course the little foreshadowing from the start was played out nicely with Hardy saying "well that was easier than i...tho".
Inevitable but still funny.
Oh and the hall passes trick for getting by the murderous stationary? Genius. Everything about this chapter is just perfect, all the characters play off each other nicely. Even the ladybug playing a role in screwing things up for hardy.

Loved this one guys.

Oh lordy I LIKE the way our main-cast girls fight! Swift's ancestral gun of perfect marksmanship, combined with taxi's party Cannon... And the drum-magazine grenade? It's a beautiful thing to picture.

And I every time Zeta has a line, I hear stereotypical flute/rattle/drum jungle-y music. She gives off that ninja sage vibe so wonderfully.

Act One, Chapter 19: The Cruel Tutelage of High Spirits

Chapter 19: Published April 13th 2013 was on a Saturday and was in week 15 of 2013.

As of this writing it was 2926 days ago

MLP FiM would air Season 5, epi 4 "Bloom & Gloom" on April 18th 2015

Right out the gate the Scholar makes a comment about how one of the worst things that could happen is some students being overzealous journalist and causing a political scandal. Hmm.. that sounds an awful lot like the Season 2, epi 23 Ponyville Confidential you got to love the little nods back to the show.  Like I've said, you don't need to like or even know about MLP or FiM to enjoy the story, I feel like it just gives a premade background full of fun things to go look up.

Did I remember that ‘magical contamination’ can mean damn near anything it wants to?

LOL Point

Hmm, herded into the boiler room hum?

The heart in my pocket began to thump so hard it was rocking in my coat. I put my hoof on the box, petting the wooden surface, and the heart quieted somewhat. Not for the first time, I wondered why I wasn’t more disturbed by its presence. Simply having it on me felt perfectly natural. I had a growing suspicion that if somepony attempted to separate me from it, we might have a problem. Briefly, I wondered if the heart had a similar effect on King Cosmo.

Oh man, I forgot about High Spirits. His diary reminds me so much of those stories you can find in the Fallout series.  You know, the ones that aren't important to the plot but still fascinating?  I put the diary entries under High Spirits Who's Who page.

Oh hey look, the chapter ended. Lets have a peek at the comments, 43

This chapter has a lot of the same feel as a Stable chapter from Fallout Equestria, very similar tone of days-gone-by mixed with the erosion of the pillars of society due to mad tinkering.

My driver made the motions of playing a piano. “It’s calliope music.”

YEP. CREEPY. DUNNO WHAT I WAS EXPECTING.

Wait, Calliope music is actually a thing? What?
With a name literally meaning "beautiful-voiced" (from kallos, meaning "beauty," and ops, meaning "voice"), Calliope was the most prominent of the Muses-the nine sister goddesses who in Greek mythology presided over poetry, song, and the arts and sciences.
Chessie really likes to pull from Greek mythology, but that is also a pony thing.

A calliope (see below for pronunciation) is a musical instrument that produces sound by sending a gas, originally steam or, more recently, compressed air, through large whistles—originally locomotive whistles.

... hmmm

learn something new every chapter

#35 · May 6th, 2016 ·  ·  ·

How delightfully macabre, master Chessie.

The elementary school I attended when I wert but a boy (situated but a wee distance from the old house) had a teacher whose favorite phrase included the words 'high spirits'.

Hence, this chapter is particularly choice.

#33 · Jul 5th, 2014 ·  ·  ·

Chapter 19: "The Cruel Tutelage of High Spirits" - well "The Cruel Tutelage of" can refer to a few things that also include things from kill bill.

And I'm still waiting on finding out who the father of that egg is!

What? Someone down voted a siggy vote? WHAT? WHY

#31 · Feb 1st, 2014 ·  ·  ·

Damn...I had a massive mishmash of chills and feels when everything came together with the boiler and the callioupe music...:twilightoops:

#27 · Apr 30th, 2013 ·  ·  ·

nice chapter here, one of the twins (i can't remember the other's name, only boil) reciting sciency jargon reminded me of Oleg from saints row 3, va bene mi amici.

i have a bad feeling about that heart

#24 · Apr 24th, 2013 ·  ·  · Chessie

Chessie
:twilightoops:Forget I said that. I just had to get used to reading first person (or should I say pony!?!) again.

Also,

“Whyfor would you wish to cure it?

Needs a space.:unsuresweetie:

:pinkiegasp: And lastly I really like the way you described high spirits fall to insanity. At first, he described how happy he was to be there and it would be great even though he was sleeping (living?) in the boiler room. Then as his life falls apart between losing his lover, misbehaving foals and a principal that's a total b*tch. The way you described the writing of the diary as he fell to madness is awesome as well. (How is horn writing just turned to scrawling) (just going to point out, in my mind I believe it was from over-exertion of his magic):pinkiecrazy:

#23 · Apr 20th, 2013 ·  ·  ·

2452747 Heh, you know, Gypsy was actually an incidental thing? We needed a character to help us world-build things as they happened to ponies besides Hardy. I didn't realize how much like Homage from Fallout Equestria she sounded until after I'd written her and gone back to read F:E again.

I'm going to give her another segment in an upcoming chapter, just to make sure nobody forgets about her.

#21 · Apr 15th, 2013 ·  ·  · Chessie

I am just a first couple pages in, but it looks great and hilarious already. A main character in a noir tale named SWIFT CUDDLES? That's just about priceless :rainbowlaugh: Ok, back to Detrot now...

#16 · Apr 13th, 2013 ·  ·  · Chessie

There are a thousand stories in the naked, hooved city.

Chessie and Kasen tell ALL of them :applejackconfused:

Just plan ahead, guys—go as dark as you want, I trust you, as long as it leads toward a purpose. I notice Hardy's bonding with the heart—definite HMMM there. 'Even then' he suspected?

Still a wonder, and I'm still hanging on every word :ajsmug:

#17 · Apr 13th, 2013 ·  ·  · Pink ManRedbush

Applejinx We've actually only told a fraction of the ones we've come up with. If we were to really try to tell EVERY tale that we've had an idea for, we'd be out of our minds by now.

Keep in mind, you guys know next to nothing about the main characters as yet and we still haven't introduced the fourth one.

#13 · Apr 13th, 2013 ·  ·  · Chessie

Poor guy, I also feel bad for Calliope, she was just trying to help. :fluttershysad: Detrot claims another ponys' sanity. Is it just me or is Detrot sounding more and more like a place that needs to be nuked with a megaspell? After you get Swift our of there of course. :scootangel:

#14 · Apr 13th, 2013 ·  ·  · meerkat8472

meerkat8472 That Scootaloo emoticon looks WAY too much like Swift.

Yeah, Detrot's a horrible place, but that's kind of the point. Keep reading. I promise it's not all darkness.

I say the last part of Spirit's spell made him bind himself to the school. A ghost that has lost its marbles is even worse than a vengeful one. The vengeful one can be counted on to act a sertain way, the crazy one can do anything and everything nasty.

#3 · Apr 13th, 2013 ·  ·  · Delerious

So, Detective Hard Boiled and a group of pleasure ponies stumble across an eldritch nth-dimensional structure accompanied by a notebook with feverish scrawlings? Looks like a real... :coolphoto: H.B. & Lovecraft situation.

YES

Clearly, once High Spirits fixed the leak, he was finally able to get some rest, after which he won the lottery and moved to the Bahaymas, where he met a nice pegasus mare named Coconut Colada who made him forget all about Calliope. Yes, that is exactly what happened. :trixieshiftleft::trixieshiftright:
